Fashion & Textile Designer, Sindiso Khumalo Collaborates With Vans

Sindiso Khumalo is a South African designer of her sustainable fashion brand based in Cape Town. She is also the LVMHPrize 2020 finalist and was also a part of the 2020 Net-a-Porter Vanguard Programme now she has just recently collaborated with one of the biggest shoe brands, Vans under Vans Vault.

Vans Vault was launched back in 2003 as a way of elevating OG models like the Old Skools, Authentics and Slip Ons through choice materials and unique patterns. Vans Vault provides a platform for collaborations with designers, brands and artists. Khumalo is now one of the many designers collaborating with Vans and her collaboration is quite special as it was curated by Sarah Andelman, who is described as a “fashion curator and retail mastermind” by Highsnobiety. Khumalo was hand picked with three other artists; Julia Chiang, Fumiko Imano and Soko, to create a collab on different Vans shoes to celebrate International women’s Day.

Sindiso founded her eponymous label in 2015 with much of her work centered around creating sustainable clothing with an emphasis on uplifting women of color and telling the story of her African heritage. This same ethos was carried through as part of her Vault by Vans capsule collection. Using her mother who was an activist as inspiration, Sindiso incorporated illustrations on the quarter panels of the OG Style 24 NTC LX for adults and the Classic Slip-On for kids. The illustration shows the artists mother on her daughter’s wedding day seen in traditional Zulu attire.
