I first heard Nicole Elocin on a song titled “fortune teller” off of Blxckie’s 4LUV EP and I was enchanted by her soothing vocals. So naturally, I was excited when she took to social media to share a snippet of “Become One”.
Music naturally goes through various variations and the dominance of Amapiano has had a profound impact on Hip-Hop. At its best you will get a song like “Sete” but oftentimes, it falls flat with more misses than hits. However, I am intrigued by the impact of Amapiano on R&B. An artist like Nicole Elocin has the ability to exist on both ends of the R&B to Amapiano spectrum, with “Become One” lying at the equilibrium point of said spectrum.
The vast majority of the song sees Nicole Elocin drape the production in her caressing vocals with sprinkles of Blxckie in between. The pair’s vocal timbres are quite different and make for unique contrast in the song. I view this song as a summer jam that one could enjoy at a sundowner. Listen to “Become One” below.
