BET has always been a pioneer of African culture and excellence since its inception. With award shows illustrating a clear lack of understanding of black artists, institutions like BET are taking the power back by allowing Africans to celebrate African creatives. This year’s awards will be hosted by renowned actress, Taraji P Henson.
Recognising the need to celebrate Africans around the world, BET created the Best International Act in 2018 with its inaugural winner being Nigeria’s Davido. BET has announced its 3 nominees for the award, namely: Young Stunna (South Africa), Ayra Starr (Nigeria) and Pheelz (Nigeria)
Young Stunna first rose to prominence with his hit single “Adiwele” (Ft DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small). The young artist went on to release his debut album, Notumato, in October of 2021, cementing his place in the amapiano scene.
Nigerian based Ayra Starr has been making waves with her 19 & Dangerous Album with her drawing comparison to other global acts such as Tems and Rihanna. “Bloody Samaritan” has become a worldwide hit and at just 20 years of age, the young star is destined for great things.
Nigerian producer Pheelz is the most established of all the nominees beginning his career at the age of 18. His talent has stood the test of time with a career spanning multiple eras of Afrobeat. He has worked with the likes of Fireboy DML, Olamide, Tiwa Savage and Teni, and 2021 saw the legendary producer treat his fans with an EP titled Hear Me Out.
